Review of Daily Use
Daily use is a very engaging story. It has multiple plot twist and the reader's opinion changes very quickly throughout this short story. The story takes place in a small town, where there is much segregation and suppression against people of other races. Maggie and Mama live in a small house, they are poor and have what was passed down to them. Dee the older sister who moved away is coming back to visit her family after burning their house down and graduating high school. When she returns she is accompanied by her husband and her family notices how much she's changed. Suddenly she wants many possessions in her house to show everyone her heritage. A conflict forms when she wants to take some quilts her grandmother sewed. Mama promised to give them to Maggie but Dee wants them and she won't give up finally Maggie says she can take them but instead Mama takes the quilts form Dee and hands them to Maggie. After that Dee leaves saying things aren't so bad anymore.
This leaves the reader to wonder if Dee will ever come back or if Maggie will live a better or different life than her mother. The reader realizes that Maggie is frail and wonders if Dee will brake her down eventually or if Maggie will conquer her insecurities and stand up for herself. The story was very descriptive and was very true to the characters and setting.
