Sequel To Daily Use: The Breaking Point
Maggie:
I am hemming my dress to perfection. Mama had spent two years saving up for this day. We had saved up 300 dollars, selling meat and fishing bait, Mama had picked up an extra job and tomorrow was the day, my day. I am ready to marry John Thomas and move into a slightly better home. I am scared that the dress will highlight my flaws and John will change his mind. Everyone is coming to the wedding even Dee, we had not spoken since the quilt incident and I was ready to atone for what had happened. I will give her the quilts as a peace offering, even though she would never use them she will appreciate the gesture.
Dee:
Tomorrow I will see her, in her hideous self-hemmed dress. Mama will probably convince her that she looks great but the audience will know the truth and hopefully that Thomas boy will back out before she gets down the aisle. I'm only going there to get what I deserved the last time I went.
Mama had denied those quilts from me but I will get them this time once in for all. Maggie is an awful girl, but she is weak and I can break her down. Mama and Maggie don't understand what those quilts truly mean. Maggie is m y sister, but she is not like me, she doesn’t appreciate and treasure the things that our family has. But I do.
Mama:
I have slaved night and day to be able to support Maggie all my life. She may be married but she will always be my shy little Maggie. It has been ten years since the day I grabbed the quilts from Dee and laced them into Maggie scarred hands. I truly believe that I made the right decision that day. Ever since then, Dee or Wangero whatever she calls herself has never called. But Maggie insisted that Dee attend this humble wedding of hers. Maggie may not be as bright as Dee, but she has a pure heart. Maggie wants to give the quilt to Dee, but I don't agree. Dee has never appreciated the things that Maggie and I have done for her. Ever since she burned down that house, leaving Maggie with scars and insecurities, she has never truly been a part of our family.
“ Maggie!” I called
“ Yes Mama?” she answered
“Come outside look who's here”
Maggie comes running out to the yard and sees John standing there with flowers in his hand.
“ I am excited for tomorrow.” he says
“ Oh! John! These are beautiful!”
“ I was hoping they could be your bouquet, they were my grandmother's favorite flowers”
“ Their lovely I love these flowers too!” I realized that John wasn't that bad at all.
Maggie:
I woke up early that morning because I was too excited to sleep. The day was finally here. It was the day that I would get married. Today is the beginning of my adulthood. I was scared, but excited.
I would soon get married and my sister would be there to see it.
“ Mama!” I called, “ help me get ready!”
Mama:
Dee's car came flying through the road, and screeches to a halt. Then, out comes a fancy bright red high heeled shoe. Dee walked out of the car with her hair down to her shoulders.
“ Where's John?” she immediately asked.
“ Don't you want to talk to Maggie?” I said
“ NO, I want to talk to John to make sure he's eligible for my dear sister”
This was a surprise to me since I thought she was mad at Maggie. This was the first time she seemed genuinely interested in Maggie's life.
“ He's outback in the yard talking to the wedding officiant”
“ Perfect!” she said strutting away.
Dee:
“ John!” I called out
“ You must b the lovely Dee!” he replied
“ I am so happy that you agreed to marry my troubled sister you know because of all her “ problems”.”
“ What do you mean? I've never heard of these problems.”
“ Oh! You didn't hear? Why don't I fill you in on them”
“ Maggie got in a terrible accident as a child and can no longer bare children. She is mentally unstable too you know.”
“ WHAT?! The wedding is off!” he said running to his car.
I heard a scream from Maggie's room
“ How could you!” Maggie furiously said to me
“ Well I had to tell the truth!”
“ There's nothing true about that! I was planning to make amends but you now, I realized you don't deserve those quilts.”
“ Get out of the house and never speak to Mama or me again!” she screamed
I furiously walked to my car and soon regretted what I had done. Now, she will never see me as her sister, but I will forever be her enemy.
