Review of AR Book(Uglies)
I have recently started a series, the first book in this series is called Uglies and it is a very insightful story. It takes place in the future, in this future the "Rusties", which is a name they use to refer to people in our century, have destroyed all our natural resources and died out. Then a new society began where people don't feel the pressure of being beautiful because when they turn 16 they get an operation to be beautiful. People are sectioned off into groups and the uglies, people who haven't gotten the operation yet, live separably from the pretties. Tally, the main character, makes friends with a girl named Shay, and travels across the river to see the "Rusty Ruins", Shay then gets the idea to run away to a city far from the grasps of society that lives in the wild called "Smoke". Tally refuses to go because she wants to get her operation but a group called the "Specials" makes her go to the "Smoke" and give them the location. Soon Tally realizes she loves the smoke and finds out that the operation changes the way people think by putting lesions in their brain, however the specials capture her and bring her back to the city. In hope of finding a cure she turns beautiful and waits for people from "Smoke" to find her and save her.
This book is very interesting as it describes a very distant future with many unfamiliar things in it. I love reading books about future society but this one is by far the best. One of my favorite aspects of the book is that it refers to common illnesses and culture as very weird and sometimes tragic, one example of this is anorexia, people in the book are told about this and cannot fathom the idea of someone doing that to themselves so they believe its fake, and a way to show how awful Rusty times were.
